Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention

Why is Catalytic Converter Theft Happening? - Catalytic Converters contain several types of recyclable materials that can be easily “scrapped” to make a quick buck. Thefts of catalytic converters increase each time the cost of scrap metal, particularly platinum, increases.

Target Vehicles – Catalytic converter thieves generally target high profile vehicles like trucks or SUV’s because the higher ground clearance allows easier access underneath the vehicle. However, sports cars and sedans are not immune to converter theft.

Types of Theft – Most thieves remove the catalytic converter by one of two means: (1) Use of a wrench to remove the bolts that hold the converter to the vehicle frame; or (2) Use of a saw to cut the converter and extract it from the vehicle.

Prevention Methods

  1. Park in areas where your vehicle will most easily be seen by passers-by. For example, park under lights after dark or near windows at a business. Park near security cameras, if possible.

  1. Park defensively. Park high profile vehicles so they are surrounded by low ground clearance vehicles. This may deter thieves by making it harder for them to access the most vulnerable targets.

  1. If your catalytic converter is a “bolt on” model, you can have the bolts welded shut. This will prevent Type 1 theft as listed above.

  1. Catalytic converter protective sleeves can be purchased to make sawing through the converter more difficult. Sleeves can be purchased from Catclamp or Catcuff. This will help protect against Type 2 theft as listed above.

  1. Identification Etching. Etch your converter with your driver’s license number and state. This will help police track your property if it is stolen. File a police report immediately after the theft is noticed to provide for better tracking.
