02/02/10 Operation Safe Highway 2010

In 2009, the Lee’s Summit Police Department Traffic Section initiated Operation Safe Highway in an effort to lower traffic crash occurrences on M-291 Highway between NE Colbern Road and US 50 Highway. As of December 1, 2009 crashes in this area have decreased more than 20% over data from the last 3 years.

In January, Operation Safe Highway 2010 was initiated in an effort to lower crash occurrences on US 50 Hwy through Lee’s Summit. Over the past 3 years, more than 700 automobile crashes have occurred on US 50 Hwy. Automobile crashes cost millions of dollars in personal injury and property damage each year. The Lee’s Summit Police Department Traffic Section in cooperation with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is dedicated to addressing and reducing this problem.

In 2010 officers will be out in greater numbers on US 50 Hwy enforcing traffic regulations, focusing on excessive speed and following too close violations as a main contributor to crashes. Specific areas of concern on US 50 are the intersections of M-291 and the area between Chipman Road and I-470. Motorists should be aware of their following distances in these areas and ensure they are a safe distance and speed behind the car in front of them. Stop light violations and failing to yield within the intersections are additional contributing factors as well for motorists exit US 50. Many of the violations occur during times of congestion and motorists should be aware of upcoming traffic issues during rush hours and inclement weather.

In coordination with MODOT, a “Travel Safe Zone” will be implemented on US 50 Highway indicating enhanced enforcement and increased fines within the zone. In addition an awareness campaign will inform motorists as electronic signs will be erected warning motorists of the travel safe zone when it goes into effect.
