This past week Sergeant Don Frizzell of the Lee’s Summit Police Department and Stephen R. Million of the Modern Woodmen of America presented a check for over $12,000 to the Giles family to assist with their medical battles. The donation was made possible through outstanding participation from players and sponsors in the 15th Annual Steve Hagedorn Memorial Charity Golf Tournament held in September.
The Steve Hagedorn Tournament is a continuing endeavor of Sgt. Don Frizzell since organizing the first event in 1994. The first tournament assisted Lee’s Summit Police Officer Steve Hagedorn who was suffering from terminal cancer. After the passing of Officer Hagedorn Sgt. Frizzell, with assistance from Mike Schumacher, continued the tradition and gained the additional support of a sponsor through Stephen Million and Modern Woodmen of America Camps 3794 and 7147 who provide a $5,000 matching fund. Sgt. Frizzell and Modern Woodmen of America have held strong to the 15 year tradition that proceeds from the tournament will benefit an individual or family struggling with a medical battle.
This year the organizing group selected Stephanie and Bruce Giles as the beneficiaries of the tournament. Three years ago Stephanie Giles was diagnosed with a debilitating case of Crohn's disease. Several treatment methods have been attempted which have led to several surgeries which provide only temporary relief. Due to the effects on her body from the treatments, surgeries, and the Crohn's disease itself, Stephanie was forced to quit her full-time job. This condition has not only taken a physical toll on her but has proved to be a daily challenge in taking care of two young children as well. On top of the mounting medical bills the Giles family received additional unfortunate news involving Bruce Giles, Stephanie's husband. Bruce and Stephanie learned that he has a rare disease that is attacking his liver. The doctor's believe this may be Waldenstrom, a rare form of cancer which only 2% of the population is diagnosed with. Over the last several months Bruce has lost more than 50 pounds making it difficult for him to maintain the energy level needed to do his job. Since Bruce is the primary wage earner for the family, the financial strain and debt has become insurmountable.
Sgt. Don Frizzell, Modern Woodmen of America and the Lee’s Summit Police Department would like to thank the following sponsors and donators to the 15th Annual Steve Hagedorn Memorial Charity Golf Tournament. The overwhelming support for the past fifteen years truly demonstrates what a community is made of and the positive change we are capable of in the future. Thank you again:
