This month a new police department patrol unit has hit the streets. Officer Scott McMilian and his partner Jax, a dark coated 19 month old German Sheppard, are on patrol to provide a specialized police presence in the community and assist other officers in the performance of their duties.
Officer McMilian and Jax are the fifth K-9 unit for the LSPD since the first unit of was activated in January of 1992.
Jax and his officer handler received their certification in July with abilities in drug odor recognition, tracking, open area searches, building searches, article searches, and handler protection.
The unit will work the late evening and early morning hours in performance of their duties, but are on-call as needed.
History of LSPD K-9.
- Lee’s Summit’s first K-9 team consisted of Officer Mike Childs and Caiy. They worked until a medical retirement the summer of 1998.
- The next units were Officer Mike Childs and K-9 Charrid and Officer Mitch Wright and K-9 Ben. K-9 Ben worked until his handler left the department and Ben was retired. Officer Childs was transferred to administration from his patrol duties before K-9 Charrid’s retirement and K-9 Charrid completed his career with Officer Rick Inglima in 1998.
- After K-9 Charrid retired Officer Inglima handled K-9 Justice until his retirement early in 2009.
