The Lee’s Summit Police Department is proud of the support it has given to Special Olympics over the years. This year, the Lee’s Summit Police Department is continuing that tradition and expanding its fund raising efforts for Special Olympics. The department has four fund raising events planned for January of 2012 that are in support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The Torch Run is a yearlong law enforcement initiative designed to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and its athletes. All money that is raised in the Kansas city area goes directly to support Special Olympics athletes from the metro area.
The first event this year is the second annual “Freezin for a Reason” ride to benefit Special Olympics on Saturday, January 14th. The event is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Gail’s Harley Davidson in Grandview with a stop at the Longview Lake swim beach before ending in downtown Lee’s Summit. The ride is open to all motorcycles, Jeeps, convertibles and hot rods. For more information, you can visit www.bigheadwilson.com.
The second event this year is the annual “Cops on Top” event at Habanero’s restaurant in Lee’s Summit. Sgt. Brian Wilson and Officer Jeremy Brownlee will climb to the roof of the restaurant at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 19th, 2012 and they will not come down until they reach their fund raising goal.
The third event this year is the second annual Athletes 4 Athletes Crossfit competition. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 21st from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the New Summit Presbyterian Church in Lee’s Summit. The competition will be a three event Cross Fit competition and spectators are encouraged to stop by and watch the competition.
The final event in January is the annual Polar Bear Plunge. This year’s plunge will be held at Longview Lake on Saturday, January 28th, 2011 at noon. Sgt. Brian Wilson will lead a team of brave volunteers who will plunge into the icy waters for this cause. Sgt. Wilson has also developed a reputation as a “super plunger” which means he will enter the water once each hour for a 24 hour period beginning at noon on Friday, January 28th. For more information on the event or to make a donation, you can visit the Special Olympics website at www.somo.org/plungekc.
