Lee’s Summit, Mo. – On 2/26/2011 at approximately 7:10 am, emergency crews were called to the area of US 50 Highway and SE M-291 Highway on a single vehicle accident involving a car into the guard rail. After arriving on scene, a pumper truck with the LS Fire Department was parked near the accident scene when it was struck by a driver travelling in the eastbound lanes of 50 Highway. While emergency crews were working to secure the first accident scene, a second driver, who was also eastbound on US 50 Highway struck a marked Police unit that was positioned for traffic control. The crew of the fire pumper had just arrived on scene and were in the process of exiting the truck when the accident occurred. There were no injuries reported by the Fire Department staff. The driver of the vehicle that struck the pumper truck was transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The Police unit was unoccupied at the time of the crash, the driver of the vehicle that struck the Police unit was also transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation shows that icy roads from an early morning freezing drizzle contributed to the hazardous road conditions and the accidents.
