Cemetery Marker Restored,July 24, 2002

 (posted on July 24, 2002 15:22)

The Historical Lee’s Summit Cemetery now has one more significant marker. The original wrought iron sign that once marked the entrance to the cemetery has been restored and placed at the southeast corner. The sign is known to have been part of the cemetery since 1860.

Restoration of the sign included sandblasting, repairs and paint. Historical pictures of the sign show that the lettering in the sign had been white, but are now painted black to bring continuity to the surrounding fencing. The fencing will be continued on the eastside as well as more landscaping and security lighting.

The Lee’s Summit Cemetery is a prominent part of Lee’s Summit with several historical monuments including the Blackwell family plot, the Howard family plot and the infamous Cole Younger grave. During the week before Memorial Day this year, over 8,000 people visited the grounds. Bill Rust, the Cemetery Sexton gives over ten tours a month during the school year. Tour groups include girl scout and boy scout troops, elementary classes and history classes to name a few. If you are interested in a guided tour or other information regarding the cemetery, contact Bill at 816.969.1590.
