2011 Landscape Contest Results Announced

Twenty one Lee’s Summit residents with green thumbs and a love of all things floral and beautiful competed for top honors in the Tenth Annual Lee’s Summit Landscape Contest sponsored by the Lee’s Summit Beautification Commission.

“Each year, I am amazed by what our local gardeners do to create beautiful sanctuaries in their yards,” said Kim Fritchie, contest chairperson. “I’ve judged the contest now for about six years, and the gardens seem to be more beautiful each year.”

The judging took place the weekend of June 25-26 with three judging teams from the Beautification Commission fanning out across the city to judge entries from Lakewood to Raintree. Residents entered in six categories: Front and Back Garden, Front Garden, Back Garden, Patio/Deck/Container Garden, Water Garden, or Subdivision Entrance.
“We saw some beautiful yards, and we're grateful to those who entered the landscape contest. I wish more people would enter the contest, as we also saw some beautiful landscapes that might have been prize winners, had they been entered,” said Carol Rothwell, contest judge.

This year, the Patio and Deck category was expanded to include container gardens for those residents with limited space. The Water Garden category was also added to the contest due to the popularity of water gardens.
All contest participants will be recognized at the City Council meeting Sept. 1, followed by a reception afterward in the Strother Room of City Hall. Contest winners will receive prizes in the form of gift cards or certificates from the following sponsors: Dusselier Farms, Grass Pad, Heartland Nursery, Keller’s Landscaping Inc., Lowe’s, Nick’s Greenleaf Nursery, Randy’s Lakeview Nursery, Rose Hill Gardens, Springtime Garden Center, Suburban Lawn and Garden, and Westake/ACE Hardware on 291. First place winners will also receive a yard sign to display and a photo of their winning entry.

Laura Dawson, contest judge, said, “I have to admit that it is extremely fun to enjoy other people's creativity, talent and hard work. I also learn so much from the gardeners who participate.”
