Building Evacuated For a Small Mercury Spill
On Wednesday, November 09, 2011, at 2:44 p.m. the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported mercury spill inside of, 901 NE Independence Ave. An employee at the building reported that a blood pressure monitoring device containing mercury had broken and spilled a small amount of mercury on the floor. Staff immediately left the area and closed the door to the room.
When the fire department arrived, the one story office building was being evacuated.
Firefighters in protective equipment entered the facility and confirmed a small spill in an office. The room was isolated to prevent the spread of vapor from the room. The facility remained evacuated as a precaution until the spill could be removed by a private hazardous material response company and air monitoring is completed.
There were no reports of contamination to anyone in the building at the time of the spill.
