Kitchen Fire Damages Duplex

On Wednesday, October 05, 2011, at 4:45 p.m., the Lee's Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the duplex at 801 NE Banner Drive. A neighbor called 911 and reported smoke coming from the front door of unit B.

When the fire department arrived, light smoke was visible from the front of the B side of the one-story duplex. No one from the duplex was outside when crews arrived. 
  
Firefighters entered the building and quickly knocked down a fire in the kitchen of the B side. A search of the entire duplex confirmed that no one was home in either unit. The fire was under control by 5:02 p.m.

Fire damage was contained to the kitchen of the B side, with smoke and heat damage throughout the remainder of unit. The A side of the duplex received only minor smoke damage. The cause of the fire was determined to be food left unattended on the stove.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the residents.
