On Sunday, October 02, 2011, at 2:20 p.m. the Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 252 NE Hidden Valley Lane. The caller reported a propane tank was on fire in the attached garage and spreading to the house.
When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from the front of the two –story, single family residence. The fire had spread to the second floor, interior of the first floor, and a car parked in front of the garage.
Firefighters entered the house and contained the fire to the kitchen, garage, and a portion of the second floor over the garage. The fire was under control by 3:14 p.m. Crews remained on scene for an extended amount of time for salvage and overhaul.
The fire heavily damaged the garage and the second floor bedroom above it, with significant heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the house. Radiant heat from the fire ignited one vehicle and damaged another vehicle parked on the driveway in front of the garage doors.
The fire originated in the garage. The cause of the fire was determined to be an unknown type failure of an outdoor propane heating appliance that had just been lit by the occupant.
