Municipal Elections

Elections for Municipal Officials serving the City of Lee’s Summit are held in even-numbered years.  Terms for all elected officials are four years in length.  With an eight-member Council, terms for half the Council and one municipal judge will expire every even-numbered year.  The position of Mayor is also a four-year term.  No councilmember or mayor may serve more than two consecutive terms.  There are no limits for municipal judges. 

Candidates for Municipal Office: 

  • Lee’s Summit is a Charter form of government.  Qualifications for candidates filing for office in Lee’s Summit are included in the City Charter, Article III
  • There is no fee to file for office.
  • The City Clerk presents candidates with forms to complete and sign in her presence, affirming that the candidate meets the requirements. 
  • Candidates will also be provided with information pertaining to the election, including forms required by the State.

Candidate Filing Dates:

Candidate filing for City Council or Judge began on December 13, 2011 and ended January 17, 2012.

Candidates filing by the dates above include: 
2012 Election Candidate Filings:

District 1:  Mr. Robert L. Dye, Dr. Jacquelyn Gates, Mr. Wesley Veasman, and Mr. Robert W. Binney.

District 2:  Mr. Allan S. Gray, II

District 3:  Mr. Derek Holland and Mr. Paul Dewalt

District 4:  Mr. Robert Thane (Bob) Johnson

Municipal Judge (Dist. 263):  Mr. James M. Tobin

Absentee Voting:  Absentee ballots will be accepted beginning February 21, 2012, and the last day absentee ballots can be mailed is March 28, 2012.
Voter Registration: March 7, 2012, is the last day a voter may register to vote in this election.
