The division deals with both private development projects and the City’s capital projects program. Technical areas include transportation, traffic, stormwater, water, sanitary sewer, solid waste, construction management and inspections. Staff members also provide technical support to the airport, solid waste and operations division of Public Works as well as the Water Utilities Department.
Development Engineering staff members work with proposed development projects, reviewing the plans for streets, stormwater management, utilities, traffic control, and erosion control, for conformance with the criteria contained in the City’s Design and Construction Manual. For more information about development review please click here.
Traffic Engineering provides overall long term guidance and direction on traffic management issues including signing, signals, traffic modeling, and current customer service issues. For more information on traffic services please click here.
Engineering and support staff members throughout the division are responsible for management and/or completion of the engineering design, right of way acquisition, and bidding of roadway, bridge, airport, traffic signal, streetlight, stormwater, water and sanitary sewer projects. In addition, this team provides technical support to the Public Works Operations, Airport and Solid Waste Divisions as well as the division’s primary in-house client, the Water Utilities Department.
The Construction Management group is responsible for construction administration and inspections of major capital projects including roadways, bridges, traffic signals, streetlights, stormwater, water and sanitary sewer system projects. The Public Works Inspections subgroup monitors the construction of privately constructed facilities. Staff also monitors erosion control on construction projects and regulates activity in the public right of way.
Customer service is provided by multiple staff members and includes providing infrastructure records as well as basic technical information on floodplains, drainage concerns, traffic concerns, and easement and right-of-way information.
Public Works Engineering also takes the lead in preparing the annual update to the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, a planning document which outlines the anticipated infrastructure improvements for the next five years. Information on the status of projects included in the current Capital Improvements Plan can be found on the Capital Project Status page.
