Meet Local Artist Anthony High – July 21 in City Hall

The City of Lee’s Summit is hosting the next artist reception for Thursday, July 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in City Hall, 220 SE Green St, Lee’s Summit.  Meet local artist Anthony High, view his artwork, enjoy refreshments and sample wine courtesy of LMS Wine Creators.

High’s career began at the young age of five when his father tore open a brown paper bag and told him to “write on it”.   At that time, he could not discern the difference between writing and drawing.  With this humble beginning, he realized that art and drawing were major parts of his DNA.

Anthony High has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art Education from Lincoln University and a Studio Art Master’s Degree from the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC).  He has taught art education for the Kansas City Missouri School District for 29 years and is an adjunct professor at UMKC and the Kansas City Metropolitan Community Colleges.

His African-American heritage has provided opportunities for inspiration and subject matter.  High uses a unique and innovative printmaking process of his own called collograph, which incorporates drawing, painting, and printmaking.  High said “I pride myself in thinking ‘outside the box’ as an artist.  I often add a different twist to conventional techniques to separate my work, as evidenced in the collograph technique.”

High’s artwork will be on display in the lobby of City Hall until mid-October during business hours, Monday through Friday.   His art has been shown in an array of locations including The Kansas City Club “Sports of Course!”, Buttonwood Art Space and is currently on display at the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City through September 23.
